Kodaira's residential areas are dotted with farm plots, and there are over 200 produce stands throughout the city where farmers sell their freshly harvested fruits and vegetables. Kodaira still retains the idyllic charm of its early pioneer days. The city is now leveraging that to offer visitors an accessible getaway where they can experience a taste of the country life. Currently, more than 20 "open gardens" locations are registered with Kodaira's tourism association. Cultivation of wheat—the main ingredient of udon—flourished in Kodaira. But because wheat was a cash crop, farmers could only eat udon on rare occasions. Kodaira residents formed a preservation society to hold udon-making classes and serve noodles at the Kodaira Furusato Mura museum.
