Their albums are very rare and go for big bucks on the vintage vinyl market. Their recordings have never been legitimately reissued. That is, until now. However, this was a group that really wasn’t a group, except for a few even rarer recordings that were usurped by their record company to give the band a more authentic profile. Confused? Let me explain. By the late 1960s, the Spar Record Company, and its Giant and Hit subsidiaries, was king of the sound alike record market. They were selling millions and millions of budget line LPs and 45s of cover versions of the then current popular hits in every genre from Rock & Roll, to Pop, to Country to R&B. Singer/songwriter Bobby Russell was the point man for most of the Pop and Rock recordings for the label. His uncannily flexible voice enabled him to sound like most any singer he chose to imitate. Earlier in the decade he had formed a group of singers and studio musicians called The Now Generation (check out 'The Legendary Spar Sessions' also on SPV) with the express purpose of showcasing his own singing and compositions. The group featured Bobby Russell, along with Buzz Cason, and Jimmy Buffet on two titles. And the musicians were the cream of the crop of Nashville’s young studio musicians, including Mac Gayden, Wayne Moss, Henry Strzelecki, David Briggs, Kenny Buttrey, Norbert Putnam, Hargus 'Pig' Robbins and Charlie McCoy. These were the guys that played on the Nashville recordings by Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, etc., and several went on to form the legendary Rock band Barefoot Jerry
