One of DarkWispers' first releases in 2022 was Damekko Doubutsu, the first softsubbed version of the show. Unfortunately, that release was somewhat lacking in the script, encoding, and typesetting departments, and thus we now, after about two years of on-and-off work, present a new release of the show, featuring a new DVD encode, a heavily revised script, and actual typesetting.
Our original release was definitely full of newbie mistakes (well, we were newbies, so that's not surprising). The OCR wasn't perfect (quite a few dropped lines made it through, as did a lot of typos), the script needed a lot more care (as it turns out, 2006 fansubs did not always meet the standards of modern fansubbing in terms of translation quality or script editing), and of course the typesetting was a disaster in Arial, as I lacked any experience. In 2024, I began revising the scripts and asked Collectr, who is a big fan of the show, to typeset everything as I made my way through at a leisurely pace. It took until late 2025 before the scripts went through QC, and we were almost ready for release about half a year ago - until RCs found the existing encodes to be lacking. As wisperer proved to be unavailable for revisions, Collectr pulled through and organized a new encode, and the scripts were adjusted to fit our shiny new video files. Now, they aren't perfect, but at this point that's mostly because our source is an old DVD with not exactly sky-high bitrates, and I'm very happy with how the show looks now. I hold similar sentiment towards the scripts; I've worked through them many times and find things to change, but at some point you need to let sleeping dogs (or wolves) lie, and that's what I'll do here. No such sentiment on the typesetting though, I think it came out very nice.
The new encode also includes the non-credit OP and ED, a compilation of the TV previews, and two live action "extras." These will be released separately at a later date.
For those unaware, the DVD release coupled pairs of episodes together and gave the show an ending theme. We have respected this formatting and thus keep them in pairs (13 and 14 are separate because they released on separate DVD volumes).
A special thanks to Collectr. You can read his write-up here
So with that, we hope you enjoy Damekko Doubutsu as much as we did, it's a charming little show.
